When I realized some people thought this was cute or touching, I felt the same brand of disbelief as when George Bush Jr. got elected in 2004. (As a British magazine at the time put it, "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?")

Early November 2004 was not a particularly fun time for me either. I would describe the electorate then as not 'dumb' but 'afraid.'

Meaning that those who didn't vote for Bush were afraid after the election, or those who voted for Bush did so out of some kind of fear?

At any rate, I have to admit Kerry wasn't much of a competitor.

Both. I just remember New York, where I lived at the time, being eerily quiet the day after the election. It was spooky. Things were pretty dire the remainder of that autumn and into winter as people realized we were in for a long haul of craptacularness. But yes, those who voted for Bush primarily had fear on their minds, mostly over Iraq and the evil, blood-sucking, baby-eating Democrats who would turn the US into an Islamic state or something. Yeah Kerry sucked, but a potted plant would have been better than Bush, no?
