A design largely unaltered in the last 400 million years apparently....

Scary, but it eats the other bugs so you'll want to leave it alone!

I'm with everyone else; dragonflies are good guys. Like praying mantis. They have to be big-ass bugs, because they eat the little and medium-sized ones.

I agree bugs can be beautiful, and that they serve a purpose. This does not diminish their ability to freak me out!

Dragon Flies are harmless. They actually eat bugs that are a pest like mosquitoes.
And look at its eyes. All pretty and swirly blue.

You have my support, Claude: I don't like ANY kind of insects at all! Although I do not go massacring them either. Live and let live.

Was it dead or just posing for the shot?

It was just posing. If it had been dead, I wouldn't have screamed!

because that is a big dragonfly, and very well fed.
I used to see dragonflies all the time when I lived in Natick, MA because of the number of ponds in that area, and their job was to keep down the mosquito population.
However, the dragonflies in New England are not that colorful.

Mosquitoes are actually rare in Toronto. This one must've been eating something else!

Actually, dragonfly larvae eat...

all sorts of things in the ponds where they hatch. They don't emerge from the ponds until they're adults.
They do eat things other than mosquitoes, I have a friend in Rhode Island who keeps bees as a hobby, and he has a heck of time with the dragonflies from the pond across the street from his house. It seems that some dragonflies have a sweet tooth, and will eat honeybees, but they also eat many types of small insects.
