Cyndi and Sonja
Jan. 26th, 2009 10:19 pmI bought Cyndi Lauper's first album, She's So Unusual, in 1984. It's the first album I ever bought (I was twelve). I enjoyed the music (still do), but there was something else about her... Honestly, I think I was a little bit in love with her. As much as you can be in love with someone you've never met, that is. I can't remember if I knew I was gay yet at that point, but that doesn't really have anything to do with it. There was just something about her personality that touched my heart.
I've probably had that feeling a few times since for musicians or actors, male or female, but I don't remember any of them off the top of my head. But I just recently finished watching the first season of the excellent tv show The Wire, and it's happened again. (No spoilers in the comments, please. I'm planning to watch the remaining four seasons.) This time it's Sonja Sohn and the character she played, Detective Shakima 'Kima' Greggs. I don't know what it is about her, but there's something special going on there.
